Russia. Nabokov was born on 22 April (10 April Old Style), in Saint Petersburg, to a wealthy and prominent family of the Russian nobility. His family traced its roots to the 14th-century Tatar prince Nabok Murza, who entered into the service of the Tsars, and from whom the family name is derived.: 16 His father was Vladimir Dmitrievich Nabokov (–), a liberal lawyer. Julian W. Connolly (PhD Harvard University) is a professor of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of Virginia. He is the author of Nabokov's Early Fiction: Patterns of Self and Other () and editor of Nabokov and His Fiction: New Perspectives () and The Cambridge Companion to Nabokov (). He has published over sixty articles on Russian literature.
